D'Feet Breast Cancer Run/Walk 2009
(20 points)

Dates: Saturday, October 24, 2009
Registration begins at 6:15 am

Volunteer Registration: Specific volunteer hours to be scheduled by D'Feet Breast Cancer Volunteer Director, Dolly Warren. Please contact Ms. Warren by email at dollywarren@swbell.net to sign up for a volunteer shift and include D'Feet Volunteer in the subject line of your email. Please respond by 9/25/09.(minimum of 3 hrs required for INDS credit).

Participation: Open to all students. This activity cannot be repeated for credit.

Description: D’Feet Breast Cancer, a grassroots, volunteer organization, helps uninsured and underserved women in Galveston County obtain screening mammograms. You can help through the fund-raising A Celebration of Life Walk/Run or by teaching women about self examinations through the educational outreach program.

Activities: Go to breastcancer.org to learn about diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. Learn the alternative therapies being used in cancer treatment.

Volunteer at the Celebration of Life Walk/Run on Saturday, 10/24 for a minimum of three hours.

Write a reflective essay

  • 1. Summarizing what you learned at the website.
  • 2.Describing your own discipline’s role in the treatment of breast cancer.
  • 3. Discuss what you learned about the need for an interdisciplinary team approach to treating breast cancer.
  • Describe your duties at the event.
  • (Essay and evaluation of the activity are due one month from the date of the activity - November 24th.)

    Activity Objectives: Students will have the opportunity to:

  • Summarize the multi-disciplinary approach to cancer treatment and the benefits of an interdisciplinary approach to the primary and supplemental treatment for women with breast cancer.

  • Learn and teach techniques for self-examination for women.Identify the steps needed to become an advocate for change to improve health within a community.

  • Learn and teach techniques for self-examination for women (for students who participate in the outreach education program.
