Adaptive Sports Fest by Texas Adaptive Aquatics 2009
(25 points)

Date: Saturday, September 12, 2009

Location: Event is headquartered at Moody Gardens in Galveston

Event Time: 9 am - 4 pm
Shifts available #1: 9am - 1pm or #2: 1pm-5pm.
(Students must sign up for one of the two shifts. Points value of 25 is applicable to one shift and can not be duplicated by working both shifts).

Participation: Open to all students

Description: TEXAS ADAPTIVE AQUATICS (T.A.A.) features an outstanding adaptive water skiing program that allows people with physical and/or mental disabilities the opportunity to discover the thrill and excitement of water skiing, sailing, and kayaking. T.A.A. founded in 1989 and incorporated in the State of Texas in 1990, is a non-profit sports training program for children and adults with disabilities. Participate as a volunteer and see first-hand how a medical team collaborates in the field.

Description Activities:

  • Volunteers are needed to get in the water with participants and assist Texas Adaptive Aquatics with preparing the participants and placing the participants on water skis and being there to assist as needed. The event will also have kayaking and hand cycling. If individuals would like to help but are not interested in getting in to the water they can help with registration.

  • Visit the organization website and read about their various events and issues that pertain to these type of events online at http://www.taasports.org/about.php.

  • Register with Maria Miller, Volunteer Coordinator at Moody Gardens for a full shift (shift #1 or #2) at the Adaptive Sports Fest.

  • Write a reflection essay that includes the date/s you participated and answers the following questions:
    1. Why would it be important for someone with special needs, to engage in physical activities?
    2. What can your discipline contribute to 1. the rehabilitation of the individual and 2. be an advocate for the them?
    3. What did you do as a volunteer at this event?
    4. What did you learn from working with the disabled at the event? (For example, quality of life issues, fitness, attitude)
    5. As a volunteer, what worked well and what problems did you see at the event?
    6. How were communications handled among volunteers and by event coordinators?
    7. Did any emergencies occur and how were these handled?
