Expand Your Horizons Educational Program For Girls-2009
(30 points)

Dates: Orientation meeting to be scheduled at a mutually convenient time.

February 7, 2009 - U of H Clear Lake

February 28, 2009 - Rice University in Houston

8:00 AM -12:00 PM or 12:00 PM - 4:00 PM (You will attend one of the sessions)

Participation: Open to students in the CLS and PT Programs. (PT students contact Dr. Janna McGaugh, CLS students contact Ms. Jane Finley.) (This activity can be used only once for INDS points.)

Description: Introduce young girls to an exciting career in healthcare! Work in a small group to develop an entertaining presentation about your career – what you do, the training required, the type of patients you see, how you make a difference, and the personal benefits of your chosen profession. The 50 minute presentation will include an interactive hands-on experience representative of your profession. Make a difference by introducing 6th-8th grade girls to the possibility of a career in health care. The Expand Your Horizons Conference is held each year to interest girls in math, science, and technology.

Activities

  1. Attend an orientation session with Jana McGaugh, and/or Jane Finley. They will explain the details of the program and give you ideas for your presentation.

  2. Meet with a small group of students in your discipline and develop your presentation.

  3. Give your presentation at the Expand Your Horizons Conference on the scheduled date to approximately 20-25 girls. Observe the presentation given by the other discipline from UTMB.

  4. Document your presentation. Provide the outline of your presentation, a copy of the hand-outs, and a list of the materials used.

  5. Write a reflective essay (due one month after the activity date).Critique your presentation in regards to strengths, weaknesses, timing, age appropriateness, and interest level to audience.

    2. What recommendations do you have for next year’s program?

    3. Would you recommend this activity to other students?
