12th Annual Drum Fishing Tournament for the Physically Challenged
(25 points)

Dates: Film: Wednesday, April 1st at 3 p.m. in Quad Room 1.102 and

Friday, April 3 and Saturday, April 4: Volunteers needed for Friday serving food and cleanup Friday, April 3, 2009 from 4:00p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and on Saturday, April 4, 2009, from 6-8 am loading boats, and unloading 12 noon-2 p.m.. (Fishing tournament begins at 8 am, with the weigh in from 1-2 p.m. followed by awards ceremony, raffle and Bar-B-Que.)

Participation: Open to all students.

Description: This activity provides an opportunity to examine the need for people with disability to live their dreams, and then apply this knowledge in a meaningful activity serving this population. Turning P.O.I.N.T. Drum Tournament for the Physically Challenged on Friday, April 3 and/or Saturday, April 4. You may sign up for volunteer shifts at the movie. You need to do both activities to get interdisciplinary skills credit. You will sign up for your volunteer hours at the movie presentation.

Activities:

  1. Attend the movie Murderball on as scheduled. The film gives an intimate look at the people who despite their disabilities, have not given up their competitive spirit.

  2. Volunteer at the Turning POINT Drum Tournament for the Physically Challenged. You will assist in the loading and unloading of boats, assist in the food preparations and serving, etc. Make this a wonderful event to celebrate their opportunity to stay active. Each student will work a minimum of a two hour shift.

    The fishing tournament starts at 8:00 AM on Saturday. The fish weigh-in is from 1-2:00 followed by the awards ceremony, raffle and Bar-B-Que. They need volunteers to:

    Friday, 4/3: 4:00-10:00 PM Serve food and assist in clean-up

    Saturday, 4/4: 6:00-8:00 AM Assist in boat loading, 12:00-4:00 PM Assist in boat Unloading, food preparation, clean-up

  3. Write a reflection essay that includes the date/s you participated and answers the following questions:
    1. What were some inspiring moments throughout the movie? Did his movie change any of your views about quadriplegics?
    2. Why would it be important for any person, especially someone with special needs, to engage in physical activities?
    3. Each discipline could play a role in advocating for these individuals. What can your discipline contribute?
    4. What did you do at the tournament?
    5. What did you learn from working with the disabled at the fishing tournament? (For example, quality of life issues, fitness, attitude)
