Grand Rounds I
(10 points)

Date: To be scheduled according to UTMB Calendar of Events

Participation: Open to all students. Can be repeated once for additional points.

Description Get the most out of the UTMB learning environment. Learn about the issues facing health care providers in other disciplines that may affect your profession. Attend a Grand Rounds on campus that would add an interdisciplinary perspective to your curriculum. For example, a PA may want to learn about pulmonary medicine or rehabilitation sciences. A CLS may want to attend a presentation about medicine and community health. You will attend the grand round, read a research article on the subject, and then relate how the knowledge gained is related to your future role as a healthcare professional in your discipline.

Activities:

  1. Attend a Grand Round Activity. This activity is designed to be interdisciplinary, Grand Rounds within your discipline, while worthwhile, are not given credit in Interdisciplinary Studies. A general guideline of those not considered outside your discipline include:

    Clinical Laboratory Science:

    - Pathology

    Occupational Therapy:

    - Rehabilitation Medicine

    - Orthopedics

    - Sports Medicine

    Physician Assistant Studies:

    - Family Medicine

    - General Internal Medicine

    - Obstetrics & Gynecology

    Physical Therapy:

    - Orthopedics

    - Rehabilitation Sciences

    - Sports Medicine

    Respiratory Care:

    - Pulmonary Medicine

    Contact Lodie Massey before attending the Grand Round for confirmation of credit for attendance.

  2. Research an article related to the subject of the Grand Round.

  3. Discuss your findings and implications for your profession with your advisor or another faculty member of your department.

  4. Write a summary give gives:

    Title of presentation

    - Speaker’s name, credentials and department affiliation

    - Date

    - Brief summary of the topic presented

    - How this presentation is related to your future role as a health care professional? How do you plan to apply this knowledge? This summary is due one month after the activity attended. Email Henry Cavazos (hcavazos@utmb.edu) after the summary and evaluation are complete.

Activity Objectives: Students will have the opportunity to:

  1. Hear leaders in related healthcare fields discuss the issues facing their professions.

  2. Identify how advancements and issues facing other disciplines may have a direct impact on their own profession and steps to be taken.
