Health Fairs and/or Camps Volunteer-I 2008-2009
Dates:Will vary depending on health fair or Camp opportunity. One example is the Galveston County Fair: Work a minimum of a 3 hour shift: 8:00-11:00 AM or 11:00-2:00 PM. on date of the event. (Distance Students will have options available in their own community.) Participation: Open to all students. (PA and CLS students are often needed for taking blood pressures and for glucose and cholesterol testing and education. OT students have a booth at the Galveston Co. Health Fair. Also, in Galveston County students may be needed for the D'feet Breast Cancer Education Booth.) Description: Develop your patient communication/education skills such as by conducting in-take and/or exit consultations to patients completing screening. You will work alongside other health professionals and agencies with the general public at a Health Fair. Gain valuable experience working with a diverse population. Required Activities: 1. Attend orientations as scheduled by individual departments (if applicable). 2. Participate in the Health Fair on the assigned day. Each student will be responsible for a three-hour shift (8-11 am or 11 am-2 pm).which will include set-up or take-down. 3.Write a reflective essay (due one month after the event took place) to summarize your experience. Answer the following questions: 4. Give the date of the activity, and what service you provided. (For CLS: Describe the quality control issues in a public health fair screening. 5. Would you recommend participation to other students in this health fair? 6. How could you do follow-up in a health fair to determine whether the patients retain the information and act upon your recommendations? 7. Describe the cultural differences noted that may influence health-related behaviors and compliance with therapeutic interventions in various patients. Activity Objectives: Students will be exposed to a diverse population. Demonstrate communication and patient education skills in conducting screenings done at the Health Fair. Collaborate with other professions to demonstrate the impact of laboratory/blood pressure readings or other types of screening results in care management. Describe the importance of accurate results in a public health care setting and the implication for patient care management
