Interprofessional Leadership Positions
Dates: Vary according to the organization. Participation: Open to all students. Description: Serve as an officer in an interprofessional organization (e.g., Student Government Association, Frontera de Salud (on-campus students) or plan a community activity that includes more than one discipline. For distance students working at hospitals, participation in a variety of committees might be interprofessional. These committees might include: Quality Improvement (e.g. infection control), research, surgical guidelines, JCAHO, and ethics.) Other participation in journal clubs, and patient support groups (e.g., ALS) can apply. Contact Lodie Massey at lmmassey@utmb.edu for approval.) Represent your school (or your profession for distance students) in a leadership capacity, working with other professions for an event such as a health fair. A campus example is the SGA, which works with various campus entities to find solutions and answers to student questions; they conduct an annual online student satisfaction survey and use the information gathered to decide on issues to work on in the coming year. They also sponsor Intramural sports and community service projects. Activities: Attend and participate in meetings of the organization as scheduled. Participate on sub-committees or task forces as assigned. Learn how to work with others, how to delegate responsibility, and how to negotiate and reach consensus on issues. Represent your program by educating others to understand your discipline and their aspect of patient service. At the end of your year of service, submit an online essay to include the following: beginning and ending dates of service; your position; your responsibilities/achievements during the year; other professions with whom you worked; what you learned about teamwork, negotiation, consensus building, delegating, time management and organizing events or other activities; and what qualities you believe a leader should possess. Activity objectives: Students will be given an opportunity to : Develop an understanding of qualities and responsibilities of a leader, and observe other members in leadership positions; Acquire knowledge about other professions.
