Syllabus

First Aid Teams-
(10 points)

Dates: as scheduled for each event.

Description: Learn about working in an interdisciplinary team at special events, such as: Fun Runs, Marathons, County Fairs, etc. Discover what supplies and equipment are needed at such events. Volunteer to help people with common injuries and other complaints who visit First Aid stations at community events.

Activities:

  • 1. Contact Michelle Conley (maconley@utmb.edu) with information about the event for approval.
  • 2. Attend any orientation session(s) as scheduled, the work a minimum 2 hour shift at the event.
  • 3. Write a reflective essay ( due one month after the event) to include:
  • a. The name, date and location of the event.
  • b. Any profession that was represented on the first aid team.
  • c. How you functioned on the team and how the individuals worked together as a team.
  • d. The types of injuries/complaints that were treated at the first aid station.
  • e. Recommendations to improve the care or teamwork at the station.
  • f. Whether you would recommend this activity to future students.

    Activity Objectives: Students will have the opportunity to:

  • 1. Work as a member of a first aid team at a community event.
  • 2. Learn about common injuries/complaints treated at a first aid station.
  • 3. Delineate strategies to improve care or teamwork at a first aid station.
