Resource & Crisis Center of Galveston County
(25 points)

Dates/Times: Beginning Spring Semester Jan. 7, '08

Participation: Open to all SAHS students.

Description: The Center offers the following programs, most of which are available for the students to volunteer:

  • Community Education-Such as the “Breaking The Silence” project on domestic violence

  • CASA-Voices for Children-work with abused and neglected children

  • Crisis Outreach (Office is in Texas City)

  • Residential (work with peer groups, educational seminars)

  • Legal department (assist attorney with protective orders and VAWA-Violence Against Women Act).

  • Fundraising and Development

    Activities:

  • 1. Go to the website: Go to www.rccgc.org for complete information on all programs.

  • . Call or email Volunteer coordinator, Joey Lowry, at 409-763-1441, or lowry.lady@gmail.com for an appointment for an interview.

  • 3. Volunteer at least two hours/week for the semester.

  • 4. Abide by all rules, regulations, policies and procedures of the organization.

  • 5. Keep a journal of each volunteer experience to assist in writing your essay (see #6). Include what you learned about the physical, emotional and social needs of this population, and their families, the patient’s culture and implications for care. Note any positive aspects of, or barriers to, interdisciplinary care. After the first session, just add to your journal any NEW information. Have the supervisor on duty sign your journal each time you report to the facility.

  • 6. Write an essay summarizing your observations of the professional team, answering the following questions: q. What disciplines make up the care team; b.) Are there interactions with other health care professionals not physically present at the facility? c.) Under what circumstances would these professionals interact with someone from your discipline? D.) From your observation, do these professionals operate as an interdisciplinary team? E.) What potential legal and ethical issues do you see for professionals working in programs such as these?

    Activity Objectives:

  • 1. Observe the operation of programs at a resource and crisis center.

  • 2. Acquire knowledge about the presence or absence of interprofessional collaboration in these programs.

  • 2. Acquire knowledge regarding the special physical, emotional and social needs of the clients and their families utilizing these programs.

  • 3. Develop and understanding of the use of volunteers in programs for a resource and crisis center, including the legal and ethical issues involved.
