Libbie's Place-Senior Day Program
(20 points)

Dates:Program operates Monday thru Friday 7:30-5:45. (Volunteers are most needed from 10-12. Minimum time requirement per student visit is 2 hours.)Participation requires 10 weeks of service for a total of 20 points.

Participation:Open to all students. (There is a full-time nurse at the program, as well as other licensed professional staff.)

Description:Work in a senior day program with people age 55+ on activities such as: exercise, music games, outings. Location 2803 53rd street, Galveston (Moody Memorial First United Methodist Church).

Activities

  • Go to the Alzheimer's website at http://www.alz.org/, click on Education Center to read: a.) What is Alzheimer's; b.) Behavior Changes; c.) Brain Tour.
  • Call Corlie Jackson, volunteer coordinator, at (409)741-2538 to apply to be a volunteer and receive short orientation.
  • Sign in each time you volunteer. Keep a journal of each volunteer experience. (This journal is for your own use, but will assist you in completing your essay, see #5. Each visit following the first one, you should just record any NEW experiences.) Include in your journal what you learned about the physical, emotional and social needs of this population, and their families, the patient's culture, and implications for care.
  • Note whether there were any interdisciplinary communications and any positive aspects of, or barriers to, interdisciplinary care.
  • Write an essay (then post to your INDS Activities page) summarizing your observations of the professional team, answering the following questions: a.) What disciplines make up the care team? b.) Are there interactions with other health care professionals not physically present at the facility? c.) Under what circumstances would these professions interact with your profession? d.) From your observation, do these professionals operate as an interdisciplinary team? e.) What potential legal and ethical issues do you see for professionals working in programs such as these?

    Activity Objectives

    1. Observe the operation of a Senior day program.
    2. Acquire knowledge regarding the special physical, emotional and social needs of the clients attending this program and their families.
    3. Develop an understanding of the use of volunteers in a senior day program, including the legal and ethical issues involved.
