St. Vincent's "Well" Fair
(15 points)

Date: Saturday, September 19, 2009, 10:00 a.m. -2 p.m. (volunteers needed from 9am-3pm) at St. Vincent's House Clinic, 2817 Postoffice Street.

Participation: Open to all students. (You can use this activity only once.)

Description: Develop communications skills with patients and other health care disciplines. Assist with planning a community health fair. Offer a variety of health screenings and patient education. Learn about social, economic and cultural issues affecting the health of this community.

Activities

Write a reflective piece to summarize your experience at the Wellfair. Answer the following:

  1. What social, economic and cultural issues did you note with the population you interacted with at the activity?
  2. What did you learn about teamwork with another discipline/profession?
  3. Would you recommend participating in this activity to another student?What worked well, and what barriers did you face>

Activity Objectives: Describe the cultural differences that influence health related behaviors and compliance with therapeutic interventions in patients.

Describe the importance of communication in the public health care setting and the implications for patient management.
