Lonestar Triathlon 2009
(15 points)

Date: Sunday, April 5, 2009

Times: 5:00 am - 2:00 pm (Students must sign up for a two hour minimum shift.) Event is headquartered at Moody Gardens, Galveston.

Participation: Open to all students

Description: Learn about health issues that face marathon runners. Participate as a volunteer for the Lonestar Triathlon. See first-hand how a medical team collaborates in the field.

Description Activities:

  • Research and read an article on the healthcare issues that pertain to these type of events.

  • Register with Michelle Conley (maconley@utmb.edu) and sign up for a minimum 2 hour shift (between 5 a.m. and 2 p.m.) at the Lonestar Triathlon Festival for Sunday. You can request to work at the medical tent/aid station. However, due to the number of participants (1,000 athletes plus family and spectators), students will be given any number of responsibilities dealing with the public.

  • All students need to at least visit the medical tent/station before or after their volunteer session observing the medical team in the medical tent, and/or discussing with the medical team what sorts of issues they deal with.

  • In the space for the essay 1. Give the citation for the article that you read (title, author, date, journal/or textbook). 2. Complete the reflective essay and address the following questions:

    1. What did you observe about teamwork required for your volunteer activity.
    2. What worked well and what problems did you see?
    3. How were communications handled with each other?
    4. Did any emergencies occur and how were these handled?
