The Twelve Competencies
Syllabus

CPR - Basic Life Support 4-Hour Class
(15 points)

Dates: Choose to attend one of the classes given on: To be advised www.utmb.edu/edlab.(For Distance Students, contact your local Red Cross, American Heart Association, or other accredited CPR provider.)

Note: No one is allowed into class after the starting times. It is recommended that you arrive 10-15 minutes early to complete the registration process. Classes are held in Jennie Sealy 235, take the west elevators.

Participation: Open to all students.

Description: This class is designed unlicensed healthcare professionals that have never had a formal CPR class and for professionals who are renewing their CPR cards and feel the need to practice all of the skills prior to testing. This class allows for the maximum amount of practice and some one-on-one instruction. At the successful completion of this class you will receive an AHA Provider Card.

Description Activities:

  1. Register for the class by contacting the Education Lab at 772-2823. The fee for the course is waived for students.
  2. Complete the CPR pretest before class. You can download this packet by going to http://www.utmb.edu/edlab/. Click on the 4-hour CPR. The link to the packet is on this webpage.
  3. Attend the course.
  4. Add the activity as a completed activity. Provide Michelle Conley with a copy of your Provider Card. No other written documentation is required. As with all activities, you will need to evaluate the activity on the website.Copy of card and evaluation are due one month from the date of the class.

    Activity Objectives: The goal of the activity is to certify students in CPR. Students will have the opportunity to:

    1. Perform correct techniques for cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
    2. Identify the signs of medical emergencies (heart attack, airway passage emergencies) and be able to list the correct response.
    3. Demonstrate the proper use of the Automatic External Defibrillator (AED).
    4. Clarify the roles of emergency medical technicians and other health professionals required in emergency situations.
