Diabetes Management - What Is Your Responsibility?
(15 points)

Dates: Students can participate by going to: http://webcls.utmb.edu/diabetes/

Participation: Open to all students. Mentored by Dr.Patricia Fingerhut and Dr. Vicki Freeman.

Description: Diabetes affects 20.8 million children and adults in the U.S. (7% of the population). In this activity, you will learn specific skills for the management of diabetic patients in the community and home setting. Review case studies and explore the issues and common patient errors in performing self-monitoring fingersticks. Explore your discipline’s role in the treatment process and the need for collaboration with other healthcare professions. Activities:

  1. Students participate by going to the http://webcls.utmb.edu/diabetes/. You will learn the procedure of glucose monitoring and the symptoms of uncontrolled glucose levels.
  2. Write an essay discussing:
    1. Your specific discipline’s role in the treatment of diabetes
    2. What did you learn about the role of other disciplines?
    3. What patient errors affect quality control when self-monitoring?
    4. What are the requirements for a successful team and what are potential pitfalls? Essay and evaluation are due one month from completion of the activity. Be sure to email the INDS Coordinator after completion of your documentation.

Activity Objectives: Students will have the opportunity to:

  1. Assess a diabetic patient in the performance of a finger stick glucose using approved CLSI standard guidelines.
  2. Identify patient errors according to the PEO model to performing glucose fingersticks.
  3. Analyze the need for collaboration between health professionals to achieve quality patient outcomes and evaluate the benefits and potential pitfalls in collaboration.
  4. Discuss his/her discipline’s role in the management of diabetes.
