Pediatric Care
(50 points)
Dates: Orientation dates set each year by the Newborn Nursery. Weekly volunteering is individually scheduled.Participation: Due to limited space, students are selected through a lottery system after joining the Pediatrics Students Association. Description: Work under the Charge Nurse in the Newborn Nursery in Waverly Smith Pavilion to assist in infant care. Students complete a four hour orientation including two on-line courses and two orientation sessions. Students then work one hour a week in the Newborn Nursery. Students have the opportunity of working in the intensive care unit during their second year. This activity cannot be repeated. Activities - Students join the Pediatrics Students Association and get selected to the Newborn Nursery through a lottery system.
- Students attend two one-hour orientation programs given by Pediatrics which covers safety, procedures, and documentation.
- Students take two brief on-line courses: Prevention of Infant/Child Abduction and Handling Security Emergencies on the Patient Care Unit.
- Students work one hour a week for two semesters in the Newborn Nursery. Each session is spent caring for the babies and documenting each step.
- The second year, students may be selected to work one hour a week in the Intensive Care Unit of Pediatrics..
- Write a 300 word essay summarizing your experience in the NB nursery, to include: which disciplines you came into contact with during this time, and what services they provided the newborns; how these professionals worked together and any barriers that were faced in the care of the newborns; what you learned about the physical, emotional and social needs of the parents of this population, and any barriers to care because of cultural, economic or religious issues.
Activity Objectives Upon complete of the orientation students will be able to: - Identify which employees have a role in the prevention of infant/child abduction.
- Recall common behaviors of abductors.
- List steps to be taken in the case of suspected infant/child abduction.
- Relate identification measures employed for both employees and patients at UTMB.
- Describe methods used for infant transportation within the clinical setting.
- Summarize teaching needs for family members relative to infant abduction.
- Give examples of items on the patient care unit that would be suspicious from a security standpoint.
- State procedures to follow during a threatening phone call.
- Identify important interventions that should be carried out when an armed person enters a patient care unit.
- Describe methods that can be utilized to respond to anger.
- Review actions to take when violence erupts in a patient care area
Students will demonstrate a working knowledge of: - Proper care and Feeding of infants and documentation of results.
- Safety procedures and handling emergencies.
