Participation: Participation is open to all students. Teams of two students will visit any given home.

Description: Identify the key factors that contribute to the health of people in the face of a disaster, especially people with medical concerns. Develop the skills to interview people in their homes and conduct home visits in Galveston and help citizens with diverse ethnic backgrounds and who experience medically or physically challenging conditions to advocate for their own health and well-being during an emergency. The training sessions will cover the overall goal of the project, how home visits will be coordinated, how to communicate and what to do when visiting with people in their homes, and review the protocol for conducting an interview.

Activities:

  1. Attend one of the training cites above. Each team will receive a packet of supplies, including a clipboard, wrist key coil, lanyard with pen, view front poly envelopes, magnetic tape, and planning sheets.
  2. With a partner, visit 2-3 home visits and complete the documentation requested. Each home visit should not take more than one hour.
  3. Write a reflective essay describing what you have learned. Include your perspective on obstacles people face as well as things that are helpful when people plan for potential emergencies. Offer suggestions for how citizens who have disabilities or certain medical conditions can take more responsibility for their own health by planning ahead so that a disastrous event does not become a personal disaster. This essay is due one month after the activity is completed.
