Syllabus

Quest (aka Welcome Weekend) - Diplomat Program
(50 points)

Dates: 8 month long training program. Leadership training dates will be scheduled. Students lead the Quest Orientation held each August and participate in other voluntary activities to be scheduled throughout the year

Participation: Open to all students, however, participation is limited. Selection is determined by interview and maintained by good academic standing. Contact Mike Cromie (Office of Student Life)at 772-1996 or mcromie@utmb.edu for application.

Description: Serve as one of the leaders of Quest and represent your school or program as an ambassador for the Office of Student Life throughout the year. There will be opportunities for the student to network with faculty, administrators, or campus guests. There are six 2-hour training sessions throughout the year to develop skills in:

    • Group development and leadership and facilitating small group discussions

    • Effective team work - motivate and manage volunteers

    • Communication Skills - including public speaking and effective listening.

    • Mentoring others

    • Understanding and utilizing campus and leadership resources

    • Implementing diversity as a core value of UTMB and Quest

Activities:

  1. Attend and actively participate in six leadership training sessions. There will be six 2-hour training sessions with additional optional activities.
  2. Work with other facilitators to develop fun activities for Quest
  3. Lead both large and small group meetings during Quest and provide a fun environment for participants. Encourage participation of all new students.
  4. Participate in skits or other activities where necessary to help incoming students enjoy themselves.
  5. Serve as a positive representative of your school and UTMB throughout the school year at various voluntary
  6. Write a reflective essay describing what you learned in the leadership training sessions and by participating in activities.

Activity Objectives: The student will have opportunities to:

  1. Develop skills in the following areas through workshop training and implement these skills through projects for Quest and Student Life:

    • Developing and leading a group, including facilitation of small group discussion.

    • Effective Teamwork, including motivating and managing volunteers

    • Communication: Effective listening and presentation skills.

  2. Develop knowledgeable and skills to implement diversity as a core value of UTMB and Quest
  3. Understand and utilize campus and leadership resources.
